[HUMAN-POWERED FLIGHT BY AN AMATEUR FEMAL PILOT]

1. Introduction

We wish to fly freely like a bird in the sky. A HPF has been a people's dream from old times. The Greek myth of "Ikaros and Daedalus" is well known as the oldest flight story. You would find many of the same type of dream stories, such as a legend of the heavenly robe of an angel, in the ancient Japanese literature.

Legend of "Koukichi Ukita"(1)

In recent years, the legend of Koukichi Ukita has become known. He lived ninety years ago, before Otto Lilienthal, the German Glider King, was attempting to fly.
"Koukichi Ukita, a picture painter, studied doves, calculated the best wing area for his weight and fabricated the framework with bamboo and Japanese paper. He flew from the bridge down to the shore of a river." The legend seems quite realistic.

Let us put myths and legends aside and talk about something more realistic. Henry Kremer from England established the Kremer Prize in the HPA field in 1959. The prize was opened world-widely in 1967. Since then a study on the HPF has made rapid progress and brought true flight. In Japan, many many researchers have been studying enthusiastically. This is represented by the achievement of "Stork B" led by Dr. Hidemasa Kimura of Japan University. At first "Gossamer Condor" won the Kremer Prize and "Gossamer Albatross" succeeded in crossing over the English Channel. After that, "Musculair 2" of Germany broke the time record. The records of the prize were broken and renewed over and over again. FAI records show that "Daedalus" of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) team set the present record.

However, any stories or records being set by women have rarely been reported until now. In the field of HPF, pilots are mostly male bicycle racers. Lois McCallin set the record with "Michelob Light Eagle". She is the only wellknown female pilot in the field. She is a triathlon athlete. Our objective goal was to prove that even an amateur female pilot can enjoy flying an aircraft and that flying is not for special people but for anybody who wishes to try. We had to work for a company and did not have enough time to spend on the project; we did not even have manufacturing and assembling facilities.

The following is a report on the basic trial and progress until the amateur female pilot succeeded in flying on her own power.
