No.9 Days after leaving Okayama
The following day, Koukichi bowed his head deeply to Manbei and Yasaku, and he took a boat to Hachihama. Koukichi, banished from Okayama,had been in Hachihama for a while. Seibei, his elder brother, had already inherited his father's house and estate. Koukichi's friend, Tamon Ozaki, looked after Koukichi in many ways. Then Koukichi began to work at Hashimotoya which was a big wholesale store in Hachihama. But, he didn't want to stay in Hachihama, he wanted to gain his knowledge by traveling. He requested that he should work on ship which carries goods of Hashimotoya to the whole country. Koukichi worked on ship and visited many harbors and big towns, from Hakata(Fukuoka) to Edo(Tokyo). And in the mean time he learned a lots of unknown things. Especially, he was deeply interested in the clock which was gearing driven. He thought that the mechanism of this clock could be utilized in directional control of wings, and he overhauled and assembled this clock many times. On the other hand, Koukichi visited lots of harbors and towns. And, Koukichi was overwhelmed with a superb view on Miho beach in Suruga (Shizuoka). In Miho beach there was a pine grove, long white beach and Mt.Fuji. Then he decided to live in this country. Koukichi asked the boss of Hashimotoya to open a small store in Fuchu (Shizuoka city). Koukichi's new store was named Bizenya as same as Manbei's shop, and Koukichi sold cotton and especially from Okayama. His store was prospered gradually. Even Koukichi employed some clerk. Moreover, Koukichi was still unmarried, and his business had not a succeeded at his store. ![]() |
