As everybody knows, Klemer awards, which were set by the English industrialist Henry Klemer, are very famous for the human powered flight. At first, this awards ask the human powered aircraft (HPA) to fly taking
in the course as the letter "8"
. From that time, to win that award, HPA needs to have the quality not only to fly fast and far but also to fly freely under the sky. The FAI I-C rule seems to be based on the awards.
In Japan, people think Human powered flight of
Japan International Birdman rally
that is held by Yomiuri TV. But in that rally, 10m-plat form that is built at the shore of Biwako lake helps to take off.
Now
many problems
that are required for female human powered flight, for example, the high-leveled designing, the high-leveled flight technique, the researches to succeed in FAI flight,
are still unsolved.
2.Woman Pilots for HPA in Japan.
In Japan three woman pilots have challenged in human powered flight that is based on FAI rule.

at Ochanomizu Univ.,
Mayumi Sumikawa
at Tohoku Univ., and me,
Kotono Hori.
Three of us have little difference at the physical appearance. We are small, light and powerful
. We had trained very hard in a short term and succeeded in taking off and flying up by ourselves. These movements need the high-level flight technique.
There are few female HPA records. But the record set by the American HPA that is called
"Light Eagle"
is much greater than the others.
Our record has not reached her great record but our technique are progressing and storing step by step for our dream that people want to fly under the sky. In the female bird women, Human powered flight is gaining its position. And new female HPA pilots are expected.
3. Gender difference at the pilot
The good male pilot keeps to generate 270 watts power for an hour and the power reaches to 9.7x10^5 J. On the other hand, female pilot, at the case of general Japanese women, (
actually smaller women is suited for HPA flight.
) can reach only 5~6x10^4 J as much as she does. If she is a gold medal athlete, things become different, of course.
The gender difference is twice in power, 10 times in the time to keep the required power. Therefore male is 20 times more powerful than female. Comparing with the flight distance, men can fly 20 km far while women can fly 1km far. It is also important
that female consume many energy
that is required for the flight when she takes off and flies up only by herself.
